The Minnesota Association for Justice Elects New President – Kate E. Jaycox

Kate E. Jaycox becomes 69th President of the Minnesota Association for Justice

[Brainerd, MN] - Twin Cities attorney Kate E. Jaycox was elected president of the Minnesota Association for Justice (MAJ) at the association’s annual convention on August 18, 2023, in Brainerd. The theme of this year’s MAJ convention was “Recharge to Take Charge.”

Ms. Jaycox has chosen to focus her year as President of MAJ on attorney wellbeing, a subject that has become very personal for her. In January 2022, she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor called an acoustic neuroma and had surgery to remove the tumor in April 2022. With forced downtime during recovery, “I realized that forced rest and recovery ultimately led me to more clarify and a renewed passion – I became a better advocate for my clients.”

Ms. Jaycox is a partner at the Robins Kaplan LLP law firm, where she has practiced for 20 years. Ms. Jaycox represents individuals and families who have been injured by the pharmaceutical and medical device industry from dangerous pharmaceutical drugs and defective medical devices and others injured by corporate wrongdoing. In addition to handling cases individually, she often handles complex mass tort actions, where cases of many individuals injured by the same defective drug or medical device are consolidated. She has served in various mass tort litigation leadership positions, including most recently as co-lead of In Re Injectafer (E.D. Pa).

Ms. Jaycox says, “Wellness is critical to the successful practice of law. Attorneys need to be well – in every sense of the word – to advocate effectively on behalf of our clients, to connect with juries, and to present arguments to courts. One of my goals as President of MAJ is to convince all our members that occupational, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social wellbeing - as laid out by the National Task Force of Lawyer Well Being - are directly tied to how well we serve their clients and to the success of our law practice.”

MAJ’s core mission is to protect every Minnesotan’s constitutional right to a trial by jury, and every citizen’s right to seek redress for harms caused by the wrongful acts of others. According to Ms. Jaycox, “The last few years have brought unprecedented challenges and evolutions in our world. What has not changed is the need for ordinary people harmed by the wrongful acts of others to assert their legal rights and to obtain justice. I believe our members’ commitment to their own wellbeing will enhance the fight to obtain justice for our injured clients.”

Ms. Jaycox is licensed to practice law in Minnesota.  She graduated from University of Minnesota law school in 2004, after her first career working on political campaigns and in government. She has received numerous accolades for her legal work, including recognition in The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, Minnesota Lawyer’s POWER 30 list, and Lawdragon’s 500 Leading Plaintiff Consumer Lawyers.  In addition to serving as MAJ’s 70th President, she is one of 24 attorneys across the country who serves on the American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) Executive Committee. 

Ms. Jaycox lives in Minneapolis with her teenage daughters and English bulldog. In her off time, she enjoys being on Minnesota lakes, traveling, doing puzzles, watching movies, and attempting to garden.
