Matthew Collins, DC, DACRB, FPSC, Twin Cities Headache, Neck & Back
Program Description:
This one-hour CLE program gives attorneys a clear, practical framework for distinguishing acute disc herniations from pre-existing spinal degeneration—an issue at the heart of many injury cases. Dr. Matthew Collins, DC, FPSC draws on real case examples, including a 2023 verdict in which he testified live, to explain normal and herniated disc anatomy, NASS-approved disc nomenclature, and the limits of what MRI reports can truly tell you. Participants will learn how to decipher common MRI terminology, recognize reporting errors supported by published research, and apply scientifically defensible methods for age-dating disc pathology. The session also addresses common defense tactics involving “pre-existing conditions” and equips practitioners with precise, evidence-based language to support trauma-related injury claims from settlement through trial.
Takeaways:
- Handling common defense tactic of “pre-existing” disc issues
- Defensible age-dating of Disc Herniations (acute versus pre-existing)
- Scientific language to support new trauma over old wear-and-tear
- Deciphering common MRI language & terms
- Pitfalls of relying only on MRI reports
- Case Studies of actual age dating disc herniations from settlement to verdict
