Program Description:

This seminar will prepare attorneys to serve clients who do not speak English as their first language.   In practice, (1) non-English speakers wait longer for representation, and (2) when counsel do take non-English speaking clients, they do not always follow best practices to assure full understanding and fairness for those clients.  The discussion will cover best practices for use of certified and non-certified interpreters;  cultural barriers that impact communication and understanding; the experience of non-English speakers in the courtroom; the importance of accurate interpretation/translation; and the ethical obligation attorneys bear to provide access to justice for marginalized communities.
