Against All Odds
Featuring a keynote presentation by Judge John R. Tunheim
The Assassination of John F. Kennedy:
Opening Its History for Public Review -
From 1994 to 1998, Judge Tunheim served as
chair of the U.S. Assassination Records Review Board, an independent federal
agency that reviewed all assassination documents. The U.S. Assassination Records Review Board
concluded that federal agencies “needlessly and wastefully” kept documents
about President Kennedy’s assassination secret for decades. As a result, the Board made over 4 million
pages of material open to public review at the National Archives. Judge Tunheim will discuss the many legal,
procedural and practical obstacles faced by the Board and its staff in its
vigorous efforts to pry documents from our nation’s intelligence and law
enforcement agencies. He will also focus
on the Board’s additional accomplishments of collecting and releasing records
previously held by state and local governments and records remaining in private
hands. In addition, he will also discuss
the many evidentiary issues in the Kennedy assassination that continue today to
raise questions in the minds of people around the world -- from the Warren
Commission, to the "magic bullet," to Lee Harvey Oswald, and the
questions concerning organized crime and foreign governments, to mention just a
few issue -- and what more needs to be done to fully expose all of the
remaining secret records about one of the 20th century's most infamous murders.
