President Signs Bipartisan Medicare Law Print E-mail

Washington, DC - AAJThe following is a statement from the American Association for Justice (AAJ) President Mary Alice McLarty in response to the President signing the Strengthening Medicare and Repaying Taxpayers (SMART) Act, which was introduced by Reps. Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Ron Kind (D-WI) in the House and Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR), Rob Portman (R-OH), Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Richard Burr (R-NC) in the Senate:

“This bipartisan legislation is a practical solution that will streamline the Medicare Secondary Payer system to ensure that seniors and persons with disabilities get timely assistance and taxpayers are repaid millions of dollars every year.”

“This legislation is a big step forward and is the result of senior advocates, the legal community and the business community coming together to work out a common sense solution.”

“There is still work to be done.  To ensure this legislation has the most impact, [the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] CMS must eliminate confusion and uncertainty by providing clear, efficient and definitive information to seniors.”

The Assassination of John F. Kennedy: Opening Its History for Public Review

From 1994 to 1998, Judge Tunheim served as chair of the U.S. Assassination Records Review Board, an independent federal agency that reviewed all assassination documents.  The U.S. Assassination Records Review Board concluded that federal agencies “needlessly and wastefully” kept documents about President Kennedy’s assassination secret for decades.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN. —The Minnesota Association for Justice (MAJ) recently announced that Genevieve Zimmerman, a partner at the Minneapolis law firm Zimmerman Reed, was recognized by her peers as MAJ’s “Member of the Year.” The Award, presented at MAJ’s annual convention in Alexandria, Minnesota, was given, “In recognition of exceptional leadership and devoted service on behalf of the Minnesota Association for Justice.” In 2012, Ms. Zimmerman spearheaded the effort to educate the public about the true facts behind the supposed need for “tort reform” by organizing free screenings of the award-winning documentary film, “Hot Coffee.” The film was shown throughout the Twin Cities Metropolitan area, as well as Greater Minnesota and North Dakota. The screenings attracted a lot of media attention including interviews by local radio personalities Michele Tafoya on WCCO and Dan Barreiro on KFAN.

THE COURT STATISTICS PROJECT COLLECTS AND ANALYZES DATA RELATING TO THE WORK OF OUR NATION'S COURTS

The Court Statistics Project is a joint effort of the National Center for State Courts, the Bureau of Justice Statistics & the Conference of State Court Administrators.  The project released a report today which provides an analysis of the 2010 civil court case filings.  Their report find s that overall civil case loads are down 3% and of all of the cases filed, contract cases continue to dominate the caseload.  For more information:
